Crips Review

Any new snack is a welcome sight and one that's low fat means good news for people watching their calorie intake or wanting to lead a healthier lifestyle but still enjoy a snack in front of the TV or in their lunch box.

Crips are wheat and potato which is a new snack experience for me.
They are small almost cracker like to look at, they are a lovely baked colour.

When you bite into them its an instant cracker taste and feel, but still tastes like a crisp. My brain is still trying to work it out. My taste buds however have sussed them and are more than happy.

My personal favourites are the sea salt and balsamic vinegar, I love the sweetness of balsamic, less sour that malt vinegar. They are delicately salted.

Chris loves Cheese and Onion, again he said they look like small crackers and he said he got crisp as the texture and taste first, before he got cracker. paige said crackers, Conor very clever said they are Crips!!

So as well as tasting good, being a healthy snack they will have you debating the taste too. Crisp then cracker? Cracker then crisp? Who is right we still have not worked it out, the name works brilliantly though.

Crunchy new lower fat snack Crips 99Cals has made its debut in Tesco stores in the East Midlands and beyond.

The oven-baked wheat and potato snack created by East Midlands snack producer Crips has 70% less fat than traditional fried potato crisps and only 99 calories per pack.

The product was unveiled on the healthy snacking aisles at 39 Tesco stores from Brackley to Barnsley in July.

It is the first time that the new-look Crips 99Cals packs have gone on sale – offering a tasty, deliciously different snack to health-conscious crisp lovers with an appetite for something special.

Created by a team based at Ingleby near Derby, the Crips 99Cals range is available in three different flavours – Thai Sweet Chilli, Sea Salt & Balsamic Vinegar and Mature Cheddar Cheese & Spring Onion.
Crips have been voted number one in independent tests…beating five leading-brand healthy option snacks on taste, texture and appearance.

“We are delighted that our new Crips 99Cals range has been unveiled in Tesco stores in the East Midlands area from Northampton right up to Barnsley,” said Crips managing director Gareth Smith.

“We hope the new packs will go down a treat with customers who appreciate their snacks but who are looking for something low in calories and fat, and who don’t want to sacrifice the crunch, taste and eating experience of more traditional snacks.”

Crips 99Cals have no GM ingredients, no monosodium glutamate, are trans-fat free, have no artificial colours or preservatives, contain heaps of natural flavour, and are suitable for vegetarians.

Crips 99Cals are on sale at the Tesco stores listed overleaf at £0.49 per 22.5g pack.

Caroline Bartrop, regional marketing manager for local sourcing in north & east of England for Tesco, said: "We are delighted to be the first retailer to be stocking the new Crips 99cal range in Tesco stores. Crips is a really innovative concept and we think the packaging will have great stand out on shelf."

PATAK'S REVIEW - CELEBRATE THE INDIAN FESTIVAL OF LIGHT WITH PATAK’S

Its Diwali and  another good reason to remember, remember the 5th of November as that is this years festival date.

We love Indian food, both cooked from scratch, I have a large basket jam packed with spices and its regularly used.
I also love the joy of a takeaway every now and then, just so I can try new dishes and then experiment at home.

Patak's is something in between the two of these, at certain times its the best of both worlds. Its got the authentic taste of homemade Indian food without the cost of spices and effort of lengthy cooking and its tastier than a takeaway and has as many dishes as your local favourite.

So this Saturday I was able to make a small banquet that was as tasty as homemade and way cheaper than a takeout.

The best benefit about Patak's for me is the ease in which I can make several dishes for the family and not be in the kitchen slaving all day.
I was sent the new Onion Bhaji Mix (Pictured above) for Two, Easy Korma for two and Easy Balti for Two. I decided to treat everybody and make all three together.

They were a breeze to make, I used both of the Easy pastes for two as I wanted the meal to seem like a takeaway, where a few dishes were available, the portions are extremely generous.
Easy instructions meant there was no faffing and I did not have to keep referring to the packet.
Basically frying onions adding meat, then paste, liquid or tomatoes and simmering.

The bhajis were real fun to make, again very simple, adding water to one paste, mixing with the powder and adding onions. Frying off and done in 3 minutes.
These were the favourite of the evening. They look a bit indistinct here but they were really good looking and so tasty.

The best thing after the taste, was the fact we had a large special occasion meal, with hardly any fuss, quickly done and I was still smiling as I finished. This is not always the case if it takes too long nor did I look frazzled as sometimes is the case  cooking a lot of dishes.

With Diwali coming up and any excuse to eat Indian food, we will be stocking up on Patak's and celebrating Bonfire night and The Festival of light.

Our Indian feast Pataks Easy Balti with chicken, Patak's Easy Korma also with chicken, Patak's Onion Bhaji, my channa dhal, rice and chapatis, with sour cream.

Delicious Diwali Recipes from Anjali Pathak

“Diwali, the Indian Festival of Light, is the biggest event on the Hindu calendar and it’s also my favourite time of the year!

“The intensity of the colours and flavours of Diwali also provide us with a fantastic source of inspiration for creating our Patak’s authentic pastes, sauces and pickles. With this in mind, we’ve created a selection of mouth-watering recipes which will hopefully inspire you to host your very own Diwali celebration at home.

“Whether you want to create a modern day Diwali spread or a more traditional Indian banquet, the recipe selection has been designed to feature something for everyone. I’ll be making the trio of starters which includes Jumbo Tandoori Prawns, followed by Lamb Rogan Josh, Yellow Korma Lentils, and Creamy Paneer & Peas Balti which is a family favourite.

“As well as a celebration with food, Diwali is also about spending time with loved ones, so to help you avoid spending hours slaving away in the kitchen, we’ve created our New Easy Onion Bhaji to compliment our range of Easy Side Dishes. The scrumptious spiced and crispy deep-fried onions can now easily be recreated from the comfort of your own kitchen.

”So why not join me, and create a Diwali feast for your friends and family. There really is no better time to start your journey of exploring Indian cuisine. Happy Diwali!”

Seriously Good autumn recipes for a Seriously Good cause!

I am reviewing the sauces so look out for my verdict of Gordon Ramsays sauces soon, no swearing involved!!!

Feel Seriously Good this autumn with new recipes from Gordon Ramsay for Comic Relief. Cook up one of these simple dishes for a tasty midweek treat and raise money for a Seriously Good cause at the same time.

With at least ten pence from the sale of every jar of Seriously Good sauce going to Comic Relief you can help make a difference every time you make one of these delicious meals. The money raised goes towards transforming the lives of vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the UK and some of the poorest countries in the world (and Gordon doesn’t get a penny).

The Seriously Good range consists of five great sauces including Spicy Red Pepper & Spianata Sausage; Bolognese & Red Wine; Tomato, Black Olive & Mixed Herb; Wild Mushrooms & Mascarpone; and Cherry Tomato & Balsamic - so pick your favourite and create a delicious recipe such as the one below to feel Seriously Good this autumn.

Mushroom lasagne

1 jar Seriously Good Bolognese & Red Wine Sauce
400g mixed mushrooms (such as ceps, girolles, chestnut mushrooms), cleaned
4 tbsp olive oil
1 large onion, peeled and chopped
2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely crushed Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Splash of Marsala or dry white wine
Small handful of flat-leaf parsley, chopped
Small handful of chives, chopped
Leaves from a few sprigs of thyme
8 sheets of dried lasagne
250g fresh buffalo mozzarella, thinly sliced
2-3 tbsp grated parmesan

Trim off the hard ends of the mushrooms and chop any large ones into smaller pieces. Heat a wide frying pan with the oil and add the onion and garlic. Sweat over a medium heat for 4-5 minutes until the onions are soft. Add the mushrooms and season well with salt and pepper. Fry over a high heat until any liquid released from the mushrooms has cooked off and they are lightly browned.

Add a splash of Marsala or dry white wine and let it simmer for about 5 minutes until it has almost all evaporated. Remove the pan from the heat, mix in the Seriously Good Bolognese & Red Wine sauce and stir in the chopped herbs.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/Fan 160ºC/Gas 4. Spread about a third of the mushroom and sauce mixture over the base of a lightly greased ovenproof dish. Cover with a layer of lasagne sheets, followed by the mushroom mixture, and then add a layer of mozzarella. Repeat layering process twice, finishing with a layer of sauce. Top with any remaining cheese, and sprinkle over the grated parmesan.

Cover the dish with a piece of foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and return to the oven for another 10 minutes or until the topping is golden-brown and bubbling. Let the lasagne stand for a few minutes before slicing and serving with a green salad.

Baked haddock with tomato and balsamic sauce

1 jar Seriously Good Cherry Tomato & Balsamic sauce

4 haddock fillets (approx 500g in total)
Olive oil, to drizzle
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Handful of mixed herbs (such as basil, tarragon and chervil), roughly chopped

Preheat the oven to 220ºC/Fan 200ºC/Gas 7.
Rub the fillets with olive oil and season well with salt and pepper. Spoon a thin layer of the Seriously Good Cherry Tomato & Balsamic sauce over the base of a roasting tray. Arrange the haddock fillets on top, leaving a bit of space between each one. Spoon over the remaining sauce and scatter over the chopped herbs.
Bake for 10-12 minutes in the hot oven until the fish is firm and just cooked through. It should flake easily when prodded with a fork.
Using a fish slice or large spoon, gently lift the haddock onto a large plate and dress with the warm sauce. Serve with sautéed potatoes and steamed green beans.

Autumnal addition: For a more autumnal dish, serve with mashed sweet potato and curly kale.

Comic Relief receives proceeds of a least 10p from the sale of every jar of sauce. Gordon Ramsay does not get a penny from the sauces.
Comic Relief works year round in the UK and overseas to help people living the toughest of lives.

The money received by Comic Relief will be used to transform lives in the UK and some of the poorest countries in the world.
Just some of the ways Comic Relief cash has made a difference in Africa includes educating people about HIV and AIDS, teaching women to read, immunising children and helping people rebuild their communities after conflict.

Across the UK, examples include supporting older people in their fight to get their rights recognised, offering counselling and fun activities to give young carers a much needed break, and providing escape routes for women living with domestic violence.

Available in selected major retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and the Co-operative.

RRP £1.89 for 350g jar.

Little Dish Review

Most busy mums at some point rely on quick foods to feed their family, maybe when in from work and having to be out again in the evening.
Maybe at the weekend when you just cannot be bothered to cook, so a lot of us reach for the fridge and freezer for a convenient meal solution.
Tasty easy and ok not  going to win you a Good Housekeeping award but then nor is the two hours slaving over a hot stove making a roast.

I am a firm believer in most of the dietary advice given to mums for their children, no salt, no sugar. I am proud that we got to my children's first birthday and chocolate had not touched their lips.
Bit taken aback I was actually accused of being a mean mother for this not by my children, they were too young then, but another mum.

It is hard when time is tight to stick to your healthy pledges when all the family can eat a ready meal, but you still have to make toddler meals from scratch and you are needing a break.
So when Little Dish first appeared in the ready meal section of the supermarket, hundreds of mums could tear off their aprons, breathe a sigh of relief, not be guilt wracked that they were rubbish at parenting and feed their little ones a healthy ready meal.

I can tell you the taste and quality are superior to other kids meals and there are a few now but they just dont put the same consideration in, it pains me Little Dish are better than some of the toddler dishes I have made, but then children's meals is their business.

Dishes include new Chicken Risotto packed with British chicken and lots of nutritious vegetables, mixed together with risotto rice and cheese.
Salmon and Broccoli pasta Bake which won a Bizzie Baby Gold Award
this year.
One that I would not have touched as a child, Chicken and Butternut Squash Pie I was a fussy kid, but now even I have to say its tasty, little ones definitely love it.

The Fresh Natural Pouches are simply beautiful, both to look at and for the taste, the fruit varieties, Strawberry and Apple, Mango and Bananas and Blueberries,Apple and Bananas. Ingredients are 100% fruit.
These make great snacks for when you are trailing your toddler around town or just an in between mealtime snack.
The savoury ones great as a snack and also as an addition to a meal. Butternut Squash, Carrots and Apple.Sweet potato, Parsnips and Leek and strange but tasty Peas, Pears and Apples.

Many mums have reviewed Little Dish, what I want to review as much is the company themselves.
Little Dish are tireless in their efforts to feed your children well. The website not only promotes the dishes but they really are approachable too. Got a question, a suggestion, a worry, email THe Little Dish Team

They are there to talk to if you have any questions, this includes Katie is the Little Dish Paediatric Dietician who helps makes sure the recipes are tasty and nutritious and Dr.Shilpee who is the Little Dish nutritionist. She makes sure the tasty recipes are packed full of goodness and keeps us up to date on nutrition guidelines.

The chief tasters are two toddlers Monty and Ridley and their friends, not some fusty scientist in a white coat.
Just everything is right about Little Dish starting at the company right down to the plate.

Little Dish say "Everyone here at Little Dish has one simple, abiding wish to cook up fresh food that's healthy and good and tastes absolutely delish"

I think they can safely say they have achieved that.

ENJOY!

Little Dish recipes are up for grabs in Tesco and Sainsbury's at two for £4 until the 2nd of November.

Here's what they say.

At Little Dish we know it’s not easy making good nutritious meals for your little ones day in and day out. So that’s what we do. There’s nothing in our food that you wouldn’t find in your own kitchen.

We only use 100% natural ingredients and never add salt or sugar. We create every recipe in partnership with our nutritionist, and each Little Dish is taste tested by a team of tiny tasters before we let it out of the kitchen.

We work with the best suppliers we can find so you can feel good about what you're feeding your children. Our chicken and beef is free from antibiotics and growth hormones and comes from select British farms where the animals are well cared for, and all of our vegetables are tested for pesticides. In fact, Little Dish is so fresh and tasty even grown-ups have been known to tuck in!

You can buy Little Dish at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Waitrose Deliver and Ocado.com.

Zyliss Review - Nifty Tools for Roasting the Christmas Turkey

I love Christmas, I grew up as a child not being able to celebrate it as it was against my mum's religion. I escaped as a teenager and now Christmas is a happy and special time for me and my family.
Something I missed most not the  presents but the gathering together of family and sharing food.
So we have a traditional Christmas, real tree, turkey, stockings and more turkey.

A great big turkey dinner is the mainstay of our Christmas, I buy the biggest one I can get into my oven, it is a mammoth event just defrosting, preparing, cooking and then best of all eating. So any help I can get with this marathon is greatly appreciated.

Chris now shares the making of Christmas dinner, we both love working out what to cook, no sprouts they are banned and how best to manage the turkey, getting it as moist as we can for a large generally dry meat.

I pack the skin with butter, more goes into the cavity along with onions that steam inside. Then onions, celery and carrots make a trivet to further aid  moist meat.
Bacon rashers over the buttered breast foil packed then several hours of basting .

This year Zyliss will be helping me with this.
I usually use a ladle or spoon and this is a pain, trying to get between bird and tin to reach the juices is tricky, manoeuvring carefully with spoon without breaking the foil. The steam scalds and the fat splatters are just par for the course usually.

This year I have the Zyliss Turkey baster, RRP £14 all you spam bots looking for dodgy fertility methods, move along please and purlease stop sniggering in the cheap seats.

I always have passed them in the home ware department and sniggered, I had IVF  treatment so came across this homemade solution for pregnancy and as a result it kind of puts you off basters.
However my turkey needs are greater than childish smirks so here goes. We put it to the test on Sunday with a small chicken and its just brilliant, does what it should and being large will draw up lots of good juices come Christmas.

The interchangeable tips allow you to easily baste and inject marinades into meats, guaranteed to get your turkey succulent and bursting with flavour. With measurement markings and a uniquely designed cleaning brush, everything about this baster makes getting that golden turkey an effortless job. A unique stand also keeps the Baster level on your worktop surface.

I also received a Basting Brush its extra long so when dealing with a weighty Turkey there is no need to lift it out of the oven, you can baste where it is. The silicon bristles capture more marinade or fat to make for easier coating. When done the head is removable  so washes out much easier. RRP £9

The other fab Christmas dinner aid is the gravy  separator. RRP £13.50
Its a really good quality jug, lightweight plastic, lovely handle, a lid for storing any liquid in the fridge.
Extra feature is a strainer great for getting rid of large pieces of turkey meat,or skin. The fat separator works really well, plus its removable for easy cleaning.
All three Zyliss gadgets are really going to help with the festive fayre.

Shloer Review - Christmas Sparkle

Don't you just love the picture above, my table is very similar minus the tree, no room in my kitchen, unless one of us sat in it, also minus the Brussel Sprouts, ewwwww. Its why my children love me as much as they do at Christmas, I don't have sprouts, they are banned. I gave them to them as babies as I did not want to pass my food hates on, I even had the offending green things on my plate. Like me and their Dad, Paige and Conor detested them.
The turkey is there centre stage, we do have a good Cava for drinks, occasionally Champagne if budget permits or Sainsbury's do a super deal. I drink Shloer over the festive period as an alternative to wine, just for the refreshing taste.
Its great to offer to guests who dont drink alcohol.
Shloer has also been on every Christmas table in our house.
We as a family plan our day and menu, make the lists together and Shloer is always near the top, Paige when very small would say "Can we have Shlurp please?"
It made us laugh then  and is still affectionately named as such.

I was sent a few bottles to try, old favourites and the newer additions.

We love both the White grape, its got a good taste, very distinctive, no other grape drink like it. Its light, perfectly sweetened and just so moreish!
The red is a deeper flavour, almost like red wine in that it has a  heavy full flavour.

The newer varieties are delicious the White Grape, Raspberry and Cranberry is a lovely mix, the raspberry making this a sweet taste, little children will love this one, perfect for the Christmas table.

My wow award has to go to the White Grape and Elderflower, what a perfect combination and I think a favourite now. I love elderflower drinks and combined with Shloer White grape its delightful sweet, fizzy and light.

Before you read Shloer info below, let me tell you about their Facebook page, its fun entertaining, you have a real chance to interact with them and other fans. For me its good to know where I can buy it on offer, keep up to date with new flavours, I believe there is a Rosé now too. Also great to try and win something nice with all the little competitions they run.
