Dairylea’s Dunkers NEW Mighty Mature & Fruity Pineapple

The children will soon be going back to school, I hated the start of the 'Back to School' ads and posters, both when I was a school goer myself, also when my two were preparing for September. It seemed crazy to be looking at dull school jumpers, blazers in the summer time, but it happens to all of us parents.

One of the nice activities though is picking out the new lunch box, it still is a task even for older teens, Paige has been buying new sandwich boxes herself, keep cups and planning easy but brain feeding lunches that will keep her going through lectures.

What to put in them is always something to consider, it has to be filling, healthy and above all tasty. Sarnies can get very dull.

Dairylea have come out with two new dunkers flavours and sent us some to try, now Granny likes Dairylea, she used to make me mashed tomato and Dairylea triangles on bread when I was younger, it tastes better than it sounds honest!! so I have also been getting her to try out the new varieties for lunch. Paige wants to buy these for lunch, she dips celery and spring onion in hers.

She likes the Fruity Pineapple, she had some salad to dip in as well, as the biscuits run out far too quickly,we love those too.

But my favourite new addition is the Mighty mature, its just perfect for snacking, it actually is very creamy and light flavoured, not too strong for little Dunkers!

A great twist on the children’s party classic, NEW Fruity Pineapple Dairylea Dunkers combine juicy pineapple with all the dairyliciousness of original Dairylea for a lunchbox treat with a hint of sweetness that kids will love.

Also part of the range is NEW Mighty Mature Dairylea Dunkers, made from the tangiest mature cheddar which will definitely get your tastebuds tingling!

The new Dunkers  cheese dips  have been introduced following the successful launch of Mighty Mature and Springy Onion cheese spreads earlier this year and the brand’s move to an all-natural ingredient recipe.
Dairylea has been a firm favourite on family shopping lists for over 60 years and the new recipes mark the latest step in the brand’s journey to provide the best possible taste and nutritional credentials for families across the UK.
New Fruity Pineapple and Mighty Mature Dairylea Dunkers will be available in multi pack formats at all major supermarkets with an RRP of £2.28. For more information visit www.dairylea.co.uk or www.facebook.com/dairylea.

Dairylea Mighty Mature and Springy Onion Review

Dairylea for me was a child hood favorite, back in the days when it was only sold as a triangle of foil wrapped yumminess.
I was a very poor eater, hated veg, disliked milk, luckily for my bones, I adored cheese.

I spent ages peeling off the foil and spreading it onto toast,Granny often made me a morning snack of Dairylea triangles and sliced apples.

When the tub version came out,I happily tucked in,its just an easier way to get to the spread.
I love it when yummy food faves come up with new ways to eat the product and even more so when they introduce a new flavour.

Mighty Mature and Springy Onion, they sound fun already. I believe the names will be popular for children, great for the lunch box, however the names appeal to my daft childish side too.

But taste is the part I am most interested in.

The Mature Cheddar is good, Dairylea has all natural ingredients ,it tasted as such. The richer mature cheddar flavour has instantly made it into my new favourite lunch of the week,so good is it, I was off to buy more pots of it to keep up with the craving. Its fab on a granary roll, yummy on a baked potato. Can't wait to try it melted into pasta.

The Dairylea Springy Onion was a complete surprise, when I opened it, I saw it had a different consistency, not as solid as Dairylea spreads normally are, it calls for dipping items, carrots, celery, bread sticks. I could taste the spring onion and blended with the cheese, it makes a lovely change on a roll.

Well Dairylea took a long time adding new flavours and it was worth the wait for this mad cheese fan.

Dairylea has been a firm favourite on family shopping lists for over 60 years and the new recipes mark the latest step in the brand’s journey to provide the best possible taste and nutritional credentials for families across the UK.

The new flavours are the first in the Dairylea spread range, and have been introduced following the brand’s move to an all-natural recipe which simply consists of cheese, butter, skimmed milk, sodium bicarbonate and lemon juice!

New Mighty Mature and Springy Onion are available in 160g tubs at all major supermarkets with an RRP of £1.36.
For more information visitwww.dairylea.co.uk or www.facebook.com/dairylea.

I was supplied with vouchers to buy the Dairylea, I received no other payment or incentive to talk about the range, my views are my own.

Philadelphia Simply Stir

I need meals like the new Philadelphia Simply Stir even more at the moment, its very frustrating not to be able to cook. I broke my middle finger two weeks ago and I cannot use my right hand for at least 6-12 weeks, though I'm still managing to get my hand in,one hand.
I have gained two sous chefs, namely Chris and Paige, they chop and as long as the meal is just a stir I can do it. I like to keep if I can, its a love more than a chore.

As you know I use the tubs a lot, I have used them to make meals as a sauce and a thickener, when I was losing weight with Slimming World they kept me going through a time where cheese and cream based sauces were off the menu and they have stayed as its so much more healthy.

I was pleased to see the new Simply Stirs are relatively low in syns for a family meal,13 and 1/2 syns (serving 4 they work out at 3 and 1/2 syns), now some may consider it high but for a girl on target and I do not use my syns up most days its good.

Meals in minutes is definitely the order of the day, I chose to use fresh chicken, once that is cooked the sauce is added and meal ready, think how fast with cooked meats and fish. On top of a baked potato just run through cooked pasta or boil in the bag rice these will be great.

I used four chicken breasts, the sauce is enough to coat the chicken, I envisage using two pouches and maybe adding fresh mushrooms as well. We all loved the taste and I Paige commented she will be using these when she goes to uni.

Sorry about the blurry image one finger camera under chin,is not advised.
I can't wait until my hand is back in action,I have all sorts of plans for these, I can see a big chicken and mushroom pie, a garlic and herb chicken lasagne. Mmmm!

New Philadelphia Simply Stir is available in most supermarkets with an RRP of £1.99 for a 200g pouch. You can find it next to the current Philadelphia products in your supermarket’s refrigerated cheese aisle.

Philadelphia Simply Stir should be kept in the fridge – and can be enjoyed with a wide variety of foods including meat, fish, vegetables, rice or pasta.

Disclosure I was given two pouches of Philadelphia. I was under no obligation to receive the samples or talk about Philadelphia. I get no additional benefits for talking about the product or company.

Tartiflette Recipe

Tartiflette is serious French comfort food, I adore good cheese and potato recipes, add smoked bacon and I'm there. Tartiflette has all three and many people add cream as well. But if enough Reblochon is used, the cheese makes a really creamy sauce by itself.

My friend Cheryl Pasquier who I knew before blogging days shared her recipe with me when we had a discussion about Dauphinoise potatoes and cheese, me being an Irish girl, who potatoes are a staple diet, her an English girl living in France and that is how my love for this French dish came about.

Tartiflette comes from a region in the French Alps called Savoie, the absolute star of the dish is Reblochon cheese, the word after googling comes from the French word 'reblocher' which means to pinch a cows udder again. This was to hold back the first milk as in the 14th century landowners taxed the French farmers for the yield of milk, so holding back the milk saved them money. The second milk was richer and made a good cheese, Reblochon. Tax avoidance has its benefits!

Now I warn you it is a very ripe pongy cheese, not one to have a sniff of for freshness, once in the oven the aroma will make you realize how good it is going to be. It is seriously tasty once melted and oozing all over the potatoes and bacon.

You may be asking "Where can I buy Reblochon in the UK?" Its been a toughie for me, but recently Waitrose always has it, Tesco on occasion, I did see it it a larger Sainsbury store also. I always keep an eye out for French markets as its often sold on the delicatessen stalls!
Its pricey in the UK, but  worth the investment as the dish is so calorie laden, you may not want to eat regularly.

I believe Camembert can be used in Tartiflette, I love the rich Reblochon flavour so much I wouldn't swap, but if you have tried both, let me know!

Tartiflette I have now made many times, glug of white wine, I make it in layers as it looks more appealing. I cut the fat off the bacon, the only non fattening concession! Its a recipe that really does not need measurement, but buy a round of cheese, Waitrose sell it it half moon portions, so you need two.
I add garlic and a

Tartiflette

Ingredients

6 medium potatoes unpeeled
2 packs of smoked bacon
2 onions sliced
2 cloves garlic (optional)
Glug of white wine (optional)
Whole Reblochon cheese.

Put the oven on 200C fan or 220C, Gas mark 7.
Wash the potatoes and slice into thick slices, cook in boiling water for about 10 minutes, until soft but still slightly underdone.

Meanwhile fry onions, I use Frylight as there is enough fat in the dish and every little helps!
When onions have started to soften, add the bacon and garlic and cook until the bacon is cooked and onions nicely soft and caramelised.

In a suitable ovenproof dish, mine measures 20cm x 20cm, 6cm deep, (optional sprayed with  a little Frylight in to stop a mammoth unsticking and scrubbing after) place half the potatoes in a layer.

Top with half the bacon mix, I season with pepper, then the final layer of potatoes and again the bacon.

Finally the Reblochon, cut through the middle so the soft cheese is exposed, you will have four  semi circles, place rind up,this allows the cheese to melt and pour through to make a creamy sauce.

Cook for about 15-20 minutes until the cheese has a light golden colour. If preparing earlier in the day lower the temperature to about 180C fan etc and cook for 20-25 minutes.

Serve with a green salad and a glass of white wine!

Bon Apetit!

Fudges New Improved Biscuit Review.

I love Fudges biscuits, I am a fan already and could not really see how they could be improved, well apart from more in a box!! Well they must have heard me as there are more flapjacks in the new box, they also improved the taste and texture of those and three others in the range.

I have been happily munching on the range this week and I love the lighter cheese straws, the chewier flapjacks have a lovely sweet flavour, I loved them before and I love them more now.

The cheese straws are great with a glass of win, I cannot stop nibbling them though.

I like the more rounded flavour of the Marmite Biscuits, if you love Marmite you will adore these.

Well I was wrong they could improve the range!! Thanks Fudges!!

Hitting shelves in January, Fudges Flapjacks dipped in Belgian Chocolate (RRP £2.99), Marmite Biscuits (RRP £2.35), Cheese Straws (RRP £1.65) and Cheese Straws with Cracked Black Pepper (RRP £1.99) will be available from most major supermarkets, delis, farm shops and the Fudges online shop

Boursin Light Review

I was recently sent some Boursin products to try, the original Boursin with Garlic and herbs was a regular feature for Chris and I to snack on. Saturday nights, a dvd, a glass of wine and a tub or two of Boursin on Carrs water biscuits was a favourite. Since joining Slimming World, the full fat cheeses had to go on hold. Happily I am at my target weight, but I am still more careful about snacking.

Happy news when Boursin told me they now have a light version. I checked out the syn values so for the regular SW readers it works out at a great 1.5 syns per 25g, so perfect for popping on a ryvita for lunch.

Since cutting down on fat,I have become a lot more inventive in cooking meals that are packed with taste, so the Boursin Light works well for me, it has another advantage over the original as it seems to be more spreadable so goes further.

I have tried melting it through tagliatelle and spinach for a healthy lunch and my aim is to stuff chicken, wrap in bacon and serve with a salad and hot new potatoes.

Its a great addition to a fab range especially for those of us who are eating healthily and the taste is as great as I hoped for.

Containing 78% less fat than Boursin original garlic & herbs, Boursin Light offers the same delicious taste and creamy, crumbly texture without the added calories, so you can indulge in your favourite soft cheese guilt-free; perfect enjoyed spread over crackers, warm bread, or stirred into pasta and served with fresh salad leaves for a light lunch.

Boursin Light, is available at Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado priced at £1.90 (125g)

Laughing Cow Blue Cheese Review

IT MAY BE BLUE… BUT IT IS STILL LAUGHING!
The Laughing Cow launches NEW Light with Blue Cheese

I was pretty pleased with the launch of Laughing Cow Light with Blue Cheese. As you will know cheese is up in the top five products I review, I love it and blue cheese is a favourite.

Regular Given To Distracting Others readers also will know that I successfully dropped three dress sizes with Slimming World over a year ago and happily I am still maintaining my target weight.

Its thanks to the light versions of my favourites, I thought I would be failing when it came to cheese as I believed it would be the food I missed along with bread.

The great news is for my SW allowances I can have up to four triangles a day. I do actually eat a more varied diet and am able to add forbidden foods as I need to keep my weight up as well.

So I tried one on a crumpet firstly to see how good they were as a topping. There is a lovely blue cheese creamy taste, not too bitter and really no hint of it being a light version.

Laughing Cow have some great healthy swaps below, but I have a few of my own ideas as well.

I have decided to fill chicken breasts with the cheese and wrap in bacon, served with a salad it will be great.
It melts well so will be good for making a broccoli and blue cheese soup.
Also I want to try melted into pasta maybe with crispy bacon or pancetta.

Cheesy-peasy swaps:
• 1 small slice (25g) Stilton is equivalent to 4 The Laughing Cow Light with
Blue Cheese triangles
• 1 small slice (25g) Cheddar is equivalent to 4 The Laughing Cow Light
with Blue Cheese triangles
• 1 small slice (25g) Brie is equivalent to 3 The Laughing Cow Light with
Blue Cheese triangles

Why not try  two pieces of The Laughing Cow Light with Blue Cheese spread on two crackers
for just 93 calories instead of…
• A plain bagel with Philadelphia Light with Garlic and Herb (322 calories) – SAVING 229
calories
• Chicken and salad sandwich on white bread (297 calories per sandwich) – SAVING 204
calories
• 1 piece of wholemeal bread toasted and served with a low-fat spread (131 calories) –
SAVING 38 calories

English muffin with The Laughing Cow light Blue Cheese and bacon
Slice one English muffin in half and lightly toast. Grill 2 rashers of lean back bacon until crispy, allow to cool then roughly chop. Mash 2 The Laughing Cow Light with Blue Cheese triangles and stir in the bacon bits. Spread over the muffins and
serve with a tomato salad - 315cals/13g fat

The Laughing Cow Light with Blue Cheese and celery on oatcakes
Thinly slice 1 stick of celery and mash with 2 triangles of Laughing Cow Light with Blue Cheese spread over 2 oat
cakes or half a toasted bagel - 122cals/7g fat
The Laughing  Cow Light with Blue Cheese, Green Pepper,
walnuts and celery
Mash 1 triangle Laughing Cow light blue cheese and mix with
2 roughly walnuts spoon into middle of 2 sticks of celery -
125cals/11g fat

Common associations with blue include feeling sad, the noughties boy band and perhaps something a little more risqué, but for the UK’s most popular cheese triangle, The Laughing Cow, blue cheese is the latest flavour to join its light range.

Made with real blue cheese and with just 25 calories per triangle, The Laughing Cow Light with Blue Cheese is a perfect way to enjoy the distinctive taste of blue but without the fat,   bringing an exciting new twist to a balanced diet.

There are many ways to enjoy the new cheese; it can be spread on a cracker, enjoyed on its own as a light snack, or used as a cooking ingredient for a main dish such as a blue cheese dressing or alternative blue mash.

The new round boxes of eight cheese triangles are available now in Tesco and Sainsbury’s and will be available in Morrisons from the end of September and Asda from the middle of October.
New Laughing Cow Light Cheese spread with real Blue
Cheese is available in packs with 8 cheese triangles.

Denhay Cheese and Childhood Memories

.

Denhay are well known to me for their bacon and it is so good fresh and tasty, just how I remember bacon tasting when I was young http://given-to-distracting-others.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/denhay-bacon-review-and-farmhouse.html

Do you remember when food tasted fresh and good, real butter, real bread from a bakers, no additives.

I loved my cheese, I remember it wrapped in greaseproof paper cut off a huge block when I was a child, it would taste fresh. Now some cheese can be tasteless, a bit plasticky, I never am sure if its the wrapping or the process it goes through now.

Back to my memory of eating today's Denhay's cheddar. Its real, its like a childhood memory.

Nothing is quite so satisfying to me than a cheese sandwich. I am pretty fussy with my cheese, it has to be mature and it has to be a good one.

I love it in a roll, with a salad, wine and cheese evenings are a regular here.

Denhay's cheddar ticks all the boxes, its a good strong creamy taste, slightly salty and very rounded.  It tastes fresh and left to warm slightly before eating the depth of flavour really shines.Goes great with a farm shop pork pie and well whatever you fancy.

Ahh memories and talking of those, I will be back with a cookery themed prize courtesy of Denhay's later this week.

ROAST TURKEY RULES THE ROOST IN OUR CHILDHOOD MEMORIES

Our top three childhood memories revolve around food, according to a recent report from cheese and bacon producer Denhay Farms. Nearly one in four Brits – 24% of us – has identified the carving of the ‘big bird’ in the middle of the Christmas table as their earliest memory from childhood.  Just under a fifth of us (15%) clearly remember tucking into fish and chips by the seaside and for one in 10 (10%) it’s the memory of school dinners that sticks in our minds.

Baking moments remain prominent in our food memories, and over a third of us (38%) admit that licking the batter out of the bowl is our strongest memory of learning to cook.

Family and tradition play an important role with 34% of Brits choosing Sunday lunch as their fondest family food moment.  In addition, and contrary to recent reports* suggesting a decline in family meals, almost half of Brits (43%) still insist on sitting together at the dinner table as a family and a quarter of us (26%) will not allow the TV to be on during dinner.

As further proof of the British love affair with bacon, and proving once again that it is worthy of the top spot on Britain’s Top 100 Foods**, it’s the smell of the mighty rasher sizzling in a pan that holds the most powerful memory for one in 10 Brits.  The smell of bacon is responsible for almost a fifth (16%) of the strongest food memories in the North East, the highest in the country, and more over 55’s (over one in 10) than any other age group praise bacon with bringing back fond memories of childhood.

Surprisingly, it’s the food served at weddings that makes the least impact and, despite the effort that goes into creating the perfect menu, we needn’t worry as only 2% of us remember it!  Being cooked for by our partners also fails to impress us Brits as only 4% of men and 3% of women recall the first romantic meal cooked for them.

Psychologist Dr Jane McCartney explains, “The association between smell, taste and emotion is what triggers our memories, therefore it makes sense that food plays a big part in our most prominent memories.”

Denhay have been making award-winning West Country Farmhouse Cheddar on the farm since June 1959, using traditional skills and techniques employed in the Marshwood Vale and the West Country for generations. Denhay's cheddar has had PDO status since the mid 90s, is made entirely from milk from their own herd of cows and is made by hand before maturing on the farm and aged for at least 9 months for a distinctive, nutty, mellow flavour.

Cathedral City Selections Review

All I can really say is NOM!!

Cathedral City is a favourite buy, - the lighter mature which I reviewed while losing weight has helped feed my cheese cravings.
http://given-to-distracting-others.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/cathedral-city-mature-lighter-cheese.html

Now as many of my regular readers know, I have just moved house and am also the very proud carer of my 92 year old grandmother. This is going really well, but not leaving me a lot of time while unpacking, settling in to a new routine and providing meals at different times of the day.

Minus a cooker at the moment, is like torture, you all know I love to cook, having Granny to cook for is a great pleasure too,she adores her food. So I have been looking around for handy reasonably healthy snacks.

The takeaways are handy, however we need to eat well and we are pretty sick of junk food. I want to keep my weight loss on track too so  the slow cooker, microwave  have been a must.

For speed I am buying lots of easy to prepare foods for lunch and right on time I was offered the Cathedral City Selections to review.

They have saved me the bother of unwrapping a block of  their lovely cheese cutting a nibble sized piece off, then while chewing fighting with the cling film to re wrap, only to decide the nibble was not enough and starting again!

Paige has had countless cheese snacks bought and consumed for review, stringy ones, round discs, the tasty Chedds also by Cathedral City http://given-to-distracting-others.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/chedds-review.html

I have often dipped in myself to the child friendly snacks, they appeal to me, but this is more adult and very pleasurable.

They will make a great addition to a wine and cheese evening when I finally get unpacked, until then Granny and I will keep snacking on them to keep us going!

I also like the fact that for Granny who has a varied appetite, if she does not fancy too much the cheese can just stay in its wrapper.

If you have eaten any of the range I am preaching to the converted,  if not and you like a tasty mature cheddar, which I find to be smooth, with a really good strong, not bitter punch. The Extra Mature is particularly nibble friendly. I had not tried the Vintage 20 and was pleased by its addition to the pack. It has a good rounded taste, really flavoursome and its ideal for a quick snack bite.

Disclosure I was given a voucher to purchase Cathedral City Selections. I was under no obligation to receive the voucher or talk about this company. I get no additional benefits for talking about the product or company.

Cathedral City Come Home TV advert

Homeward Bound by Paul Simon has been used for the new Cathedral City advert and sung by Ed Prosek, I think beautifully.

The Evening Standard says: Move over Johnny Rotten, there is a new dairy singer in town”.

Cathedral City have been asking the public what food reminds you of home and commissioned a survey on this, more about this soon.

For me it was my Granny's Shepherds Pie, the lamb left from the Sunday Roast, with a light gravy and the mash on top made all crinkly, my childish words for it then. It seemed to taste so much better that way!

What food reminds you of home?

Pilgrims Choice Review

I adore cheese, I don't think I have met one yet that I did not like, and if its mature then I am even happier.
Pilgrims Choice and even more happy with the Punchy Lighter Extra Mature Cheddar I was sent to review.

I know I keep banging on about the weight I lost and I am coming up to a year of successful weight maintenance and I am actually under my target weight so can indulge from time to time.
Cheese was and is my passion, a daily portion when losing weight was a measly 30g,but a lighter cheese was 45g, add that to a recipe for 4 and my cheese craving was sated.
However I found that many of the cheeses were bland and a bit plastic tasting. I did finally source a couple but I love a mature cheese.

Pilgrims Choice Lighter is extra mature, it smells like a good cheddar, the taste is natural, strong and leaves a lovely tangy taste.

I still watch my cheese consumption to keep my weight, so when I eat it I need a really good one, this is it

I used it as a topping on lasagne and it gave a fabulous rich cheesy taste, but what I like best is a nibble of it with apple.
