The New York Bakery new launches

I was asked to review  new bagel varieties from The New York Bakery, I was really keen as I loved the  Pumpkin Seeded Bagels I tried for Halloween  a while ago

This time I tried the new launches Fruit and Oat, and a  savoury  Red Onion and Chive.  Plus Limited Edition Blueberry Bagels.

My only problem was picking which one for Granny and I to try first.

We opted for savoury and into the toaster they went.

I have to say the bagels are divine, the sweetness of the red onion was really good, the nice thing about them were the actual pieces of onion, soft and caramelized. The chives complemented the bagel too. We ate them with slices of Red Leicester. Chris had his just with butter and was another fan.

They are really filling for a lunch too.

The next morning I had to try the blueberry bagel and they were as I had hoped, sweet, with succulent blueberries. These I just ate with butter, they needed nothing else, however I did add some cream cheese to one for supper. I am sad these are a limited edition as they really are one of my fave New York Bakery bagels so far.

The fruit and oat variety was another lovely bagel, the oats  make this a great breakfast addition and the sweet fruit really complements the bagel.

What appeals to me is firstly how filling one bagel is, how tasty and how fresh. Secondly they have an excellent sell by date, so great for buying in a weekly shop. Lastly its just nice to have something a bit different and tasty for breakfast.

New York Bakery Co’s Fruit & Oat and Red Onion & Chive bagels cost from £1.55 for a pack of four and are available at Tesco and Morrisons stores nationwide from January 2013. Visit the New York Bakery Co Facebook page at www.facebook.com/newyorkbakery for more information or recipe tips.

Guylians Valentine's Day

Its that lovely time of year, chocolates, roses, chocolates, love, chocolates!!

I was sent a Valentine's Day gift from Guylian. The  heart shaped I Love You box is perfect for Valentine chocolate lovers. Inside are individually wrapped chocolate hearts filled with hazelnut praline. The chocolate is so creamy and smooth, too good for me to wait until the big day of love I'm afraid.

It is often said that flowers mean ‘I am sorry’ but chocolates mean ‘I love you’, and what better way to say this than with one of the delectable boxes of chocolates that are on offer from Guylian this Valentine’s Day.  For Valentine’s Day 2013 the world’s favourite Belgian chocolatier has the answer: a fusion of romance and delectably mouth watering chocolates that will convey all your romantic sentiments with one bite.

Guylian Belgian Chocolate Seashells
The well loved classic gets a romantic twist for Valentine’s Day. Made from the finest West African cocoa beans and filled with melt-in-your-mouth roasted hazelnut praline, each heavenly Guylian seashell is lovingly crafted from a blend of delicious white, milk and dark Belgian chocolate (RSP £3.99 for 250g).

Guylian I Love You
Individually wrapped in luxurious golden foil within an eye catching red box, these romantic heart shaped chocolates, filled with roasted hazelnut praline are the perfect way to say ‘I Love You’ this Valentine’s Day. The 50g box (RSP £1.49) which contains four praline filled hearts is the ideal love token, whilst the 125g heart shaped box (pictured. RSP £3.99) makes a more substantial Valentine’s Day present.

Guylian’s Valentine’s Day chocolates are available from all major supermarkets and selected independent stores nationwide.

Boursin Light Review

I was recently sent some Boursin products to try, the original Boursin with Garlic and herbs was a regular feature for Chris and I to snack on. Saturday nights, a dvd, a glass of wine and a tub or two of Boursin on Carrs water biscuits was a favourite. Since joining Slimming World, the full fat cheeses had to go on hold. Happily I am at my target weight, but I am still more careful about snacking.

Happy news when Boursin told me they now have a light version. I checked out the syn values so for the regular SW readers it works out at a great 1.5 syns per 25g, so perfect for popping on a ryvita for lunch.

Since cutting down on fat,I have become a lot more inventive in cooking meals that are packed with taste, so the Boursin Light works well for me, it has another advantage over the original as it seems to be more spreadable so goes further.

I have tried melting it through tagliatelle and spinach for a healthy lunch and my aim is to stuff chicken, wrap in bacon and serve with a salad and hot new potatoes.

Its a great addition to a fab range especially for those of us who are eating healthily and the taste is as great as I hoped for.

Containing 78% less fat than Boursin original garlic & herbs, Boursin Light offers the same delicious taste and creamy, crumbly texture without the added calories, so you can indulge in your favourite soft cheese guilt-free; perfect enjoyed spread over crackers, warm bread, or stirred into pasta and served with fresh salad leaves for a light lunch.

Boursin Light, is available at Tesco, Waitrose and Ocado priced at £1.90 (125g)
Calorie Information: 139 per 100g serving
Typical values per 100g

Shake up your Wake up with Denhay Farms this Farmhouse Breakfast Week!

There are many special event weeks  to take part in but Farmhouse Breakfast week is one I look forward to.
As you may have read on my blog, I have decided to eat breakfast every day.
I have found it gives me more energy, sets me up for the day, as I am making it for Granny who I care for anyway,so it seems sensible that I eat then too. Today being Sunday, the family are all in ,fed upwith the snow, just starting to fall again and a big home cooked breakfast is the perfect tonic.

Denhay sent me an Ultimate Breakfast Box and opening it was a treat in itself.

I spied Denhay bacon which is made using only British outdoor bred pork and is cured by hand with sea salt and matured slowly. They do not add water to the meat which means its like bacon  used to be when I was a child. Succulent and meaty.

A whopping 5 million of us eat sausages every day*,   and I was sent spoiltpig sausages, they are produced using pork approved by Freedom Food to strict RSPCA welfare standards, this means the animal has lived a healthy and happy life. The meat content is 80% and if they are good enough for Prince Charles, I am happy to tuck in too.

I always buy free range eggs, but the Clarence Court Burford Brown eggs in the hamper look truly good. They have a real rich brown shell, really strong looking.

Fresh mushrooms, Tracklements Toamato sauce which is really rich, good old HP sauce and a new one for me a tasty salsa to serve make this a weekend treat.

The meal  was truly delicious, the sausages delicious and meaty and no fat at all, the bacon was just scrummy, the eggs perfect with the most orange yolk I have seen, it  makes me yearn to live at a farmhouse just for the breakfasts!

Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day, but it’s all too easy to get stuck in a boring breakfast rut, or even skip it altogether. This Farmhouse Breakfast Week (20th-26th January), get inspired with Denhay Farms’ Ultimate Breakfast Box and whip up some delicious creations to start your day the best way.

Alpro #DeskFest Fruity Marbled Porridge

My fifth and final #deskfest was just perfect for the a winter morning. It has  snowed overnight and its so chilly. A big bowl of porridge made with Alpro milk was just the thing to tuck into.

I am feeling decidedly full and warm. I made a fruit compote with some leftover raspberries and swirled it through the porridge for sweetness.Very tasty indeed.

Now we all have our own ways of making porridge, Chris makes his in the microwave, I like to make a big pan full.

Mine was made with 50g of Scottish porridge oats and 350 ml of Alpro Soya milk. I brought them to the boil and simmered and stirred for 4 minutes.

While this was cooking, in a small pan I popped in the raspberries and a little apple juice and simmered. You can add sugar if you like it sweeter.

Then its just a case of piling your yummy porridge in a big bowl, swirling through the fruit compote and topping with some fresh raspberries.

Granny and I had a big bowl each and the birds in the garden got the leftovers, with more snow forecast for this afternoon they need a breakfast too.

I have loved being an Alpro ambassador and eating a range of breakfasts for five days, all using Alpro goodies.

The #DeskFest starts today and you can get involved, just upload all your deskfest creations on Twitter/Instagram//Pinterest including the hashtag #deskfest.  Alpro are holding a competition to win breakfast in New York, so any pictures tweeted to the deskfest hashtag, will automatically be included.

#Deskfest Alpro Challenge Oaty Chocolate Banana Shake.

"When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"
"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do you say, Piglet?"
"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully.
"It's the same thing," he said.”

#Deskfest  Day 4 here at Given To Distracting Others and its a busy Friday, I have lots to do so I made another drink.  I am really enjoying the time spent and A chocolate drink is possibly not what I would drink for breakfast using Alpro Hazelnut milk. I made a bowl of fruit but the shake was so filling I struggled.

I added a little pouring yogurt to make it like a  thick shake and it certainly helped. Plus the addition of oats gives a filling and healthy fibre boost.

Oaty Chocolate Banana Shake

75ml  Alpro hazelnut milk
50ml Alpro pouring yogurt
1 large ripe banana
3 tsp  cocoa powder (adjust to taste)
50g fine rolled oats (leave out if you do not have a high speed blender)

Method
  1. Place the all the ingredients  into a high speed blender. Pulse to break up the banana, then blend on high speed for a couple of minutes until completely smooth. Check the flavour and add honey or sugar to sweeten if desired.  Blend for a few more seconds, then serve.

I added a little honey and next time will only use 2 tsps cocoa, I found it  a tad strong, but my son loved it.

#Deskfest Challenge American Blueberry Pancakes

Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper

Halfway through my #deskfest challenge and I am definitely benefiting from the extra energy.

I also know the family are loving the breakfasts and I have managed to get Conor to eat something which was an unexpected bonus.
I have made these on pancake day and usually with cows milk.

For a different breakfast, it  has been a huge hit with all of us.  I made the batter the night before so it would be faster to make in the morning.
I toyed with adding sugar to the batter but decided to just let the blueberries add the sweetness and drizzle with orange blossom honey.

This has to be my fave breakfast so far and the Alpro made no difference to the taste or outcome of my usual recipe.

200g self raising flour
1 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
1 egg
300 ml Alpro unsweetened milk
 knob of melted butter
150g blueberries
oil to cook
Orange Blossom honey

Makes about 16 pancakes.

Sieve the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a large bowl.

Beat the egg with the milk, make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and whisk in the milk to make a thick smooth batter.

Beat in the melted butter, and gently stir in half the blueberries.

Heat a small amount of oil a large non-stick frying pan.

Drop a large spoonful of the batter per pancake into the pan. I use a tablespoon.

I start by making one at a time until I get used to timings and spread, then I make 3 or 4 at a time.

Cook  over a medium heat until small bubbles appear on the surface of each pancake, then turn and cook for 2-3 minutes until golden.

Cover with kitchen paper to keep warm while you use up the rest of the batter. Serve with orange blossom honey, maple syrup or sprinkle with sugar.

Serve with raspberries and the rest of the blueberries.

Alpro #Deskfest Challenge Smoothie

Never work before breakfast; if you have to work before breakfast, eat your breakfast first.  ~Josh Billings

I am making a real good start with my #deskfest challenge with Alpro  and loving the extra energy I seem to be getting. My brain seems to be functioning better and I also seem to have more energy at the end of the day.

I have to say the Smoothies have a keen edge on my favourite breakfasts, if your fruit is chopped up the day before, its a fast meal. Really filling and very good for you. I have tried this with the Almond Milk this morning.

Oh and have you ever seen a mango this big, I have a really good Indian grocer just around the corner. £3 for a £1. Plenty of healthy smoothies coming up.

Healthy Breakfast Smoothie.

Place 1 small banana, a handful of raspberries and  a ripe mango in a blender. Whizz until smooth then stir in
1 serving of Alpro Almond milk.

I like the liquid breakfast, this morning has been hectic and I had no time for a sit down breakfast, the smoothie was a great energy fix.while I blogged.

Alpro Ambassador #Deskfest

With on-the-go breakfasts increasing at the workplace, people are opting for expensive, unhealthy choices to eat at their desk in the mornings or just skipping breakfast completely. I work from home and with a busy life I also skipped breakfast a lot last year. I have made a resolution for 2013 to eat breakfast every day and as I am making it for my Granny who I care for full time, it will be easier (I hope) to keep to.

I was invited to be one of the Alpro ambassadors and take part in a 5 day #deskfest challenge for the start of 2013 I have been asked to create five simple breakfasts to enjoy at my desk incorporating an Alpro product.

The concept of #deskfest encourages people to put a creative, healthy spin on their morning routine – changing their dull, unhealthy breakfast into a delicious, simple start to the day.

My desk is a laptop, my lap, products I review and lots of brand release paperwork, all this is usually on my sofa, but it is still a work place so my #deskfest will be shots of this and around the kitchen.

The idea is that you share your deskfest creations on Twitter/Instagram/Facebook/Pinterest including the hashtag #deskfest. I am documenting on the blog for others who may want to get involved too. Alpro are doing a wider competition to win breakfast in New York, so any pictures tweeted to the deskfest hashtag, will automatically be included.

So my first breakfast was rather good, I decided to have a tropical  theme.

The Alpro Pouring Yogurt with Vanilla, mixed with a little plain yogurt, then poured over, melon, pineapple and grapes, topped with a mix of oats, pumpkin seeds and raisins.
Very simple, very quick to make, incredibly tasty and gave me just the kickstart for my new decision.

Disclosure I was given  free products. I was under no obligation to receive the sample or talk about this company.

    Famille Bougrier Wine Review

I was sent two delightful bottles of wine to sample over Christmas and New Year.
They both are produced by Société Bougrier ,a family-run wine producer/negociant company based in the Loire in Northern France.

Covering some 800 hectares of vineyards across three main Loire regions (Muscadet, Anjou-Saumur and Touraine) it produces around 50,000 hl of wine per annum.

    I was sent a Muscadet and a  Rosé d’Anjou 2011

The Rose Anjou is firstly very pretty, a lovely pale pink. Perfect for the dinner table. The wine is fruity yet crisp. I tasted stummer fruits and love the light taste, but also approved of the dry crisp edge.

I have never tried a Muscadet, so glad I have now. I found it to be far drier than I imagined. It is really dry, just how I love drinking wine, I am sad that I tried it without a good fish dish. It has a rich crisp taste.

The UK is one of  Société Bougrier's key markets, where wines are currently at Majestic, Oddbins, Nicolas, Direct Wines, Marks & Spencer and via importers such as Coe Vintners, Harvey’s, Wine Importers and Avery’s.
