WWF to host major event in its 50th anniversary year
2011 is WWF’s 50th anniversary year, and to mark the occasion it is hosting a major event to encourage Londoners to swim for 1 mile to raise money for the world’s leading conservation organisation.
The flagship event – called the Blue Mile – will help raise vital funds to protect our rivers and seas.
Taking place at on Sunday 4 September 2011 at Stoke Newington’s West Reservoir Centre, the event will also allow people who don’t want to swim the option to kayak or stand up paddle board, whilst the more adventurous have the opportunity to complete the ‘Triple Challenge’ and sign up for all three.
To find out more and to register for the Blue Mile visit wwf.org.uk/bluemile or call 02392 312008. You can also request a fundraising pack and get training tips and advice.
Organic entrepreneur, Jo Wood, who took part in BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing is getting active this year by donning a wet suit to prepare to take part in the London event with her son Tyrone. She said:
“Our beautiful blue planet is being threatened. Marine and freshwater habitats are being challenged, every day, by the serious issues of pollution and climate change. WWF’s Blue Mile is the perfect opportunity for us to take on a challenge ourselves and enjoy our seas, rivers, lakes and waterways whilst doing something pretty unique to help preserve them.”
The official sponsor, Ecover, has previously worked with WWF to help raise awareness of the natural environment and has a solid environmental programme. With global projects specifically aimed at water conservation, Ecover is committed to making sure their products have a minimum impact on our marine and freshwater environments.
