However it was great fun especially in this time of recession and gloom to fight for something a bit frivolous.

Highly anticipated chocolate bar goes on sale at midnight opening
18th April 2012, London. Fans turned out in force last night as Kit Kat® Chunky Peanut Butter went on sale at a one-off midnight store opening in London. The much-anticipated comeback, comes as the flavour was voted for by over 250,000 fans as winner in the Chunky Champion search for a flavour.
Die-hard fans, who have been waiting seven weeks for its return since its announcement as winner, have been queuing outside the Co-op on the Strand for hours in a desperate bid to get their hands on one of the UK’s most anticipated launches of the year.
Fans coming from all over the UK, some pictured with tents and sleeping bags, were anxious to get their peanut fix. Others wore costumes to show their love for the product – with one self-confessed devotee donning a top-to-toe peanut suit.
Dave Marsh, 23 years old, a fan from Cheltenham spotted in an ‘I heart Peanut Butter’ t-shirt said, “I’ve been queuing with my girlfriend all day to make sure we were one of the first to get our hands on the bars! Ever since we heard it was making a permanent return we’ve been scanning Facebook to find out the launch date – there’s something about this flavour that’s sent the nation into a frenzy.”
The first batch that went on sale at midnight sold out within 15 minutes as fans rushed to buy several bars at a time, with over 1,000 bars being sold in total.
Co-op Store Manager, Pankaj Patel, commented: “It’s been an entertaining few days here – we’ve never seen anything like it. We’ve had fans queuing for hours and hours, and even had some cheeky members of the public trying to find ways to get their hands on the product before midnight.”
Brett Stephenson, Kit Kat Senior Brand Manager commented: “The reaction to Kit Kat® Chunky Peanut Butter has been incredible– it’s been nuts! We’ve seen so much enthusiasm and passion for the flavour and we’re delighted to be able to give fans what they’ve been waiting for.”
The bars are now on sale nationwide and are a permanent part of the Kit Kat® Chunky range.
