World Pistachio Day


 Its actually World Pistachio Day on 26th February and to celebrate here are some fun and amazing  fun facts supplied to me by Wonderful Pistachios.

1. One of the oldest flowering nut trees, humans have eaten pistachio nuts for at least 9,000 years. Pistachios are one of the only two nuts mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 43:11).

2. Current President of the United States, Barack Obama, is a self proclaimed fan of snacking on pistachios.

3. In China, the pistachio is known as the “Happy Nut” because it looks like it is smiling. Often given as a gift during the Chinese New Year, pistachios are a symbol of health, happiness and good fortune.

4. Pistachios contain only 3-4 calories per nut - they also offer vital nutrients including more than 30 different vitamins, minerals and beneficial phytonutrients making them a great guilt free snack.

5. A 30 gram serving of pistachios scores higher on the USDA’s antioxidant scorecard than a cup of green tea.

6. The Queen of Sheba loved pistachios. In fact, she demanded that the entire region’s pistachio harvest be set aside for her.

7. Israel’s seven million people consume nine million pounds of pistachios each year, making it the world’s leading per-capita pistachio consuming country at more than one pound per person.

8. California is the leading producer of pistachios worldwide producing more than 400 million pounds of pistachios each year.

9. In Russia, legend says that anyone who hears the crackle of an opening pistachio nut will soon find success.

10. One of the most popular sayings in Mexico is “Quiere el pistache pelado y en la boca,” which means wanting everything the easy way (“He wants his pistachios shelled and in the mouth”).
