Cono Sur teams up with the Seed Pantry at the Edible Garden Show

The tagline on the Cono Sur website reads
no family history, no dusty wine bottles, just quality wine
I agree with the quality and whats more the new greener wine producers have my attention and deserve a little of yours.

I have a new favourite the Cono Sur Viognier 2009 wine is refreshing perfectly crisp tastes of grapefruit I think, its definitely a citrus flavour. Warmer than a sauvignon blanc and I  sipped with pasta and red pepper and tomato pasta sauce and it was lovely.

On to why I feel happy buying the wine its the pure care for the land they have adopted. I love the fact there are geese everywhere, i expect that makes for interesting times for the workers but they have a valuable role to play for the vines.

Here are a few facts about Cono Sur’s green initiatives:

Cono Sur is the first wine producer in South America to gain the ISO 14 064 certification in August 2010 after becoming one of the world’s first carbon neutral wineries in 2007

· Bicycles - Wherever you look you’ll find bicycles propped up against the walls and at the end of rows of vines – it’s the way Cono Sur workers get to work and around the estate. As well as being highly practical it’s good for the environment.

· Geese – Over 1,000 geese live (and work) at the Cono Sur Estate. They roam the vineyards freely throughout the growing season, eating insects and bugs that would otherwise be damaging the vines. Thanks to their insatiable appetite, Cono Sur’s grapes are grown without the need for spraying pesticides.

· Wild Flowers - When the vine is flowering it is very susceptible to damage from bugs. Cultivating beautiful wild flowers every fifth row, quite literally offers the insects a better lifestyle – by effectively attracting them away from the vine.

In line with its green credentials, award-winning Chilean winery Cono Sur is linking up with urban vegetable-growing company Seed Pantry to exhibit at this year’s Edible Garden Show at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire from 18th – 20th March.

Continuing their joint efforts to encourage people to grow, cook and eat their own produce, Cono Sur and Seed Pantry are inviting visitors to their ‘Urban Garden’ stand at the Edible Garden Show, where they will demonstrate innovative ways to grow fruit and vegetables in the smallest of spaces, from window boxes to balconies, using household items such as newspapers and even bikes!

Visitors to the stand will have the opportunity to taste the delicious, sustainably-produced wines within the award-winning Cono Sur range including the highly-acclaimed Pinot Noir, as well as learn how to plant vegetable seeds, make a plant pot out of old newspaper and find out about how to match their home-grown produce to Cono Sur wines.

Sustainability is at the heart of Cono Sur’s philosophy and the team goes to great lengths to produce perfect wines with the minimum environmental impact.
