PISTACHIOS SALT and PEPPER ADD SOME SPICE TO HEALTHY LIVING

Legend has it that the Queen of Sheba decreed pistachios an exclusively royal food, going so far as to forbid commoners from growing the nut for personal use.

Nebuchadnezzar, the ancient king of Babylon, had pistachio trees planted in his fabled hanging gardens.

It is said that humans were enjoying them as early as 7,000 B.C I imagine a good few people will be eating a bowl of nuts this Christmas 2010 AD , its one of the traditional snack foods for the season.

Chris loves pistachios, its a favourite snack, so I have not seen too many of these for review.
As he munched them he actually did use the word "Wonderful"
The salt and pepper give a real new take on the creamy mildness.

Oh and I also found out that the shells come in handy to deter slugs, I found this on the fun facts on the pistachio website.
With the salt on these I can guarantee they will deter them even more.

Happy nibbling.

Pistachio fans looking for a twist on this classic snack should look no further, as Wonderful Pistachios reveal an exciting new addition to their range in the UK. The new Salt & Pepper flavour adds a perfect touch of spice to an already mouth-watering snack.

The crack of black pepper gives a subtle spicy kick, making these nutritious nuts delightfully addictive and the sleek, sophisticated green and black packaging make Wonderful Pistachios Salt & Pepper easy to find.

Dubbed the “skinny nut” by nutrition experts, a handful of pistachios offers a deliciously satisfying snack for about 100 calories. Whether enjoying them with friends at a party, at home or as a snack at work they are a great, cholesterol free snacking choice that helps keep hearts healthy.

California pistachios are the most nutrient dense of all nuts, and have more antioxidant power than any other snack nut. Rich in eight essential nutrients and polyphenol antioxidants, pistachios are a superfood known to be highly beneficial for optimum health, particularly heart health.

Pistachios can even aid weight management, with nut consumption proven to be associated with a lower body mass index. Containing only 3-4 calories per nut, pistachios also contain essential fibres to aid the digestive system, managing cholesterol and lowering blood sugar levels.

OXO’S NEW Locking Tongs - Cook Like A Pro

I love these, they have been used every day since they arrived. I can happily turn food in my best pan a Crafond which has a ban made by me of anything metal ever touching it.
We have only had a non metal fish slice and slotted spoon to use in it up until now. Makes life hard for turning meat or sausages.
The Oxo tongs having a silicon head are perfect.
I love that they lock when not in use, how many times do you go to the draw to find utensils all jumbled up and attached to each other, its no fun when you are on a time limit cooking the evening meal.
Recommended by me, I love them.

Used religiously by professional chefs everywhere, the latest addition to OXO’s sturdy, stainless steel collection of tongs will have you cooking like a pro in no time at all.

Sleek, stylish and easy to use, OXO’s NEW locking tongs with silicone heads are extremely versatile and a smart investment for any aspiring cook. Heat resistant to tackle the hottest of cooking tasks, they are suitable for non-stick cookware leaving you reassured that they wont damage your pots and pans if they happen to graze the bottom.

Use to tackle messy foods such as marinated chicken or steak, turn delicate fish and vegetables and rustle around roast potatoes, or go for it Jamie Oliver style to stir boiling rice and pasta, saving you a marathon washing up session at the end of your meal.

The stylish stainless steel finish also means that you can also impress guests with your professional cooking skills and use them to serve food at the table, buffet or BBQ.

As with all of OXO’s tongs the NEW locking tongs with silicone heads feature comfortable, non-slip handles and thumb rests and offer just the right amount of tension for comfort, making life that little bit easier in the kitchen.

Oxo Good Grips

I am a real sucker for kitchen gadgets, if they look good I am a bit of a girl here and drool over funky or pretty gadgets. If they have a purpose and really work, that too impresses me.
When it comes to Oxo gadgets I get the double bubble as they look good and and they really are useful.

The magnetic clips replace a rotten magnetic bulldog clip that has a magnet that kept falling out and it could really only hold about 8 items and then it would just spew them all over the floor, under the fridge and have me cursing.

These four little beauties are bright primary colours hold up to 18 sheets of paper and are dinky too.

True to their innovative thinking and unique design principles, the latest additions to OXO’s ingenious range of organisational gadgets provide a simple solution to everyday tasks, helping make life that little bit easier for everyone.

Small but perfectly formed, OXO’s NEW magnetic press clips are an innovative way to de-clutter your home and organise paperwork, photos and receipts.

Unlike fiddly traditional magnets, OXO’s eye-catching press clips don’t need to be removed from the surface to secure items - simply clip and release your everyday essentials with the quick press of a finger at the top of the gadget.

With a flat, slim profile perfect for busy areas such as the household fridge, OXO’s magnetic press clips have two powerful rare earth magnets that can hold up to 18 sheets of paper at one time, while soft spots cushion the press area to protect surfaces and prevent scratching.

Also new to the range are OXO’s handy bag cinches which replace cumbersome bread tags, twist ties and rubber bands, keeping all manner of ingredients fresh and secure with one simple squeeze.

Practical and extremely easy to use, simply pinch the ends of the bag cinches, twist the bag and slip it into the generously sized notch for quick and easy storage. Hidden teeth on the inside of the cinch tightly seal the bag to keep food, whether fresh or frozen, at its best.

The bag cinches also feature OXO’s trademark non-slip, soft-grip pads on the ends to ensure a soft yet secure grip.

In a range of bright and funky colours, OXO’s versatile bag cinches and magnetic press clips are easy to find in household drawers when you need them most and make an attractive addition to any busy home.

Prices:

Press clips £5 (4 pack) available in red, blue, green and orange

Bag cinches £3.50 (3 pack) available in red, blue and green

HOST THE PERFECT DINNER PARTY WITH PATAK’S

Pataks always keep bringing out something new be it a recipe, a great new food or a new idea on the website.
The new Pataks Curry Club is really clever, there are recipes from  Anjali Pathak and she has a worthy assistant in Druv Baker,  wine tips  from expert Susy Atkins which for me is essential, I like wine with curry and would like to know which ones work best.
I love the ease of explanation in the cooking and the choices of menu from starter to desserts.
A favourite has to be Indian Scotch Eggs a real spicy starter or main if served with a large salad.  You can see the recipe  here
”What does your perfect evening entail? For me, it’s all about spending quality time with loved ones. I’d cook up a delicious Indian feast, invite round my closest friends or family and we’d catch-up over of a few glasses of wine.

”This is how my family ensures we don’t lose touch with each other and, in an era where socialising online is threatening to become an acceptable substitute for face-to-face time, we encourage you to do the same. Hosting a relaxed get together with friends, a more formal dinner party or even a supper club, is a great way to keep in touch with people and even grow your social circle along the way. I like to think of this as the new form of clubbing – ‘curry clubbing’!

”To make sure you’re able to follow Patak’s recipe for success I’ve enlisted the help of two industry experts – MasterChef 2010 winner Dhruv Baker and award winning wine critic Susy Atkins. Together we form the Patak’s Taste Panel, ensuring your experience of Indian cuisine remains second to none.

”Crowned winner of BBC One’s MasterChef in April 2010, Dhruv Baker is renowned for his imaginative and exotic spice fusions and will bring a wealth of ideas and cookery expertise to the table. Dhruv moved from Mexico to India when he was only four years old and this is where his passion for Indian food truly blossomed. Recently, Dhruv and I have been very busy developing some new, delicious and exciting Patak’s recipes for you to try yourself.

”Known and respected by the industry and wine and food lovers alike for her easy and accessible approach to wine, Susy Atkins will help strengthen the panel with her wine pairing know-how. We all know that a nice cold beer goes down a treat with a fiery Indian dish but a carefully selected glass of wine can be just as good and satisfying. Susy’s expertise and guidance will unveil perfect wine choices for an array of dishes, drawing out the wonderful spices and flavours associated with Indian cuisine,

”As well as discovering the perfect fomula, Patak’s Supper Clubbing: Hungry for Company Report also revealed that many people are put off cooking up an Indian feast for friends, family or even strangers, because of the time involved and the culinary skill expected by guests.

”So that’s why we’ve just launched our very own online Curry Club, which can be accessed by visiting http://www.pataks.com/. It offers seasoned and aspiring hosts the inspiration they need from mouth-watering recipes to time saving hints and tips. With the help of our Taste Panel members we’ll ensure you’ll always serve up the perfect Indian cuisine every time, freeing up your time to fully enjoy the social aspect of your evening.

”Well, what are you waiting for? Give your friends a call, set a date in your diary and get Curry Clubbing with Patak’s! ”

Indian Scotch Eggs Recipe

This is a fabulous recipe from the Patak's Curry Club.

Here at the Patak’s Curry Club you’ll find all the inspiration you need to make mouth-watering dishes to share and enjoy with family and friends.
Discover fantastic new and exclusive recipes and recommendations from our expert Taste Panel, made up of UK-based food and drink connoisseurs to ensure your experience of Indian food remains second to none. Headed up by our very own Anjali Pathak, our panel of experts includes MasterChef 2010 winner Dhruv Baker and award-winning wine expert Susy Atkins.

Ingredients

250 g lamb mince

8 quail eggs / 4 hens eggs

2 tablespoons Patak’s Rogan Josh Paste

1 tablespoon fresh coriander, chopped

1 Patak’s Naan Bread ( I like Garlic and Coriander)

2 tablespoons plain flour

1 hen’s egg, beaten

oil for deep-frying

salt, to taste

chives, to garnish

For the dips:

1 egg yolk

1 teaspoon white wine vinegar

½ teaspoon French mustard

½ teaspoon sugar

150 ml vegetable oil

1 clove garlic, chopped

pinch of coarse sea salt

pinch of white pepper

1 tablespoon Patak’s Brinjal Pickle

1 tablespoon thick Greek yoghurt

1. Heat the oil to 180C.

2. In a bowl mix together the lamb mince, Patak’s Rogan Josh Paste and fresh coriander.

Whilst the lamb is marinating, boil the eggs. Add the eggs to simmering boiling water and cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and leave in the water for 30 seconds for quail eggs and 6 minutes for hens eggs. Remove carefully and plunge them into ice-cold water.

3. Carefully peel the eggs by gently tapping them on a hard surface before removing the shell. Set aside.

4. Grate the Patak’s Naan Bread on a grater so they resemble breadcrumbs.

5. Take 1 tablespoon of spiced lamb and flatten it in the palm of your hand.

6. Put a soft-boiled egg in the centre. Gently wrap the spiced lamb around the outside of the egg until all the egg is sealed inside.

7. Roll in a little plain flour and dip in the beaten egg.

8. Roll in the naan breadcrumbs. Repeat until all the eggs are coated.

9. Fry the Indian scotch eggs for 4 – 5 minutes until golden brown. Drain on absorbent paper.

This recipe is a wonderful starter or snack and taste great with homemade dips. It can easily be made for vegetarians by substituting the lamb with mashed potatoes.

Serves 4

Anjali’s Tip: If you don’t have time to make your own mayonnaise then just mix the crushed garlic with shop bought mayo.

Wine recommendation from Susy Atkins: Errazuriz Pinot Noir 2009, Chile

Tasting Note: Soft, juicy and fresh wine, aromatic with red-berry flavours. A red is needed because of the lamb and the spicy Patak's Rogan Josh paste here, however, it's important not to start several courses of your supper with a heavy wine; neither will it suit the lovely Indian Scotch Egg. Pinot Noir's lighter, smooth flavours provide the solution, and here is a popular, highly modern Chilean version of this fashionable grape variety. Serve very slightly cool.

3M Command Strip Products CHRISTMAS DECORATING MADE EASY

I am so pleased to be  reviewing the Command Strip products.
Especially the  Decorating Clips -All- Season Strips,  little hooks all held on by incredibly strong adhesive strips.

Each year we put fairy lights around the kitchen window and the front door, generally resorting to sellotape to hold them on as I don't like lots of pin holes marking the frames. Then I am left with sticky sellotape residue on the frame and out comes the white spirit. Its something I can do  without as the  decorations coming down is a sadness enough.
They can be used inside and out and are so small they look very tidy, yet really strong.

Another fab addition to my Christmas decorating is the 3M Command Mini Hooks, I will be hanging my door wreath up easily this year.

Tired of hanging up the same old decorations? This year, take Command! With Christmas just around the corner, decking the halls has never been easier. Command Strip Products from 3M are essential to help decorate your house for the festive period.

The genius behind Command Strip Products is the adhesive strip. It holds fast to almost any surface so you can be confident your Christmas decorations will stay fixed until the Twelfth Night, no matter how early you put them up!

It replaces the need for pins and sticky-tack to display your Christmas cards and, best of all, leaves no oily marks or holes in the wall when removed. No more damaged paint. So now, you can decorate without the worry of having to re-decorate!

In particular, Command Decorating Clips are perfect for hanging Christmas lights on windows, fireplaces and even walls, plus you can arrange them to create any pattern or word and they’ll ensure the lights keep their position. You can even trust them to keep tinsel secure on shelves or walls!

To get fully into the festive spirit, Command Hooks are great to hang stockings, baubles or garlands on mantelpieces, bedroom doors and dining room walls.

Command Strip Products are so easy to use you’ll be able to hang mistletoe in every room of the house!

Command Strip Products include:

Decorating Hook – perfect for many uses at Christmas time, especially fairy lights!

Mini and Small Hook – for hanging small decorations Medium Hook – great for hanging Christmas stockings Large Hook – perfect for larger garlands.

Grace Coconut Water Start Your New Year with Celebs’ Favourite Water

I have drunk this a few times, I consider myself luck to have Jamaican family and friends and coconut is a staple ingredient in many main course, dessert and drink.
From rice and peas to curry, it lends a fantastic taste.
You may have used coconut milk in cooking,  creamed coconut or even fresh, but I want to tell you about coconut water. This one is made by Grace who have spent nearly 100 years in making and distributing Caribbean food and drink.

Its a refreshing water, and it is not to be mistaken with the milky creamy coconut liquid.
It is a cloudy liquid and when you pour it it seems a little strange looking, but when you taste it its incredibly sweet, the coconut taste is superb.
Its extremely refreshing and best in my opinion served very cold.
I have been buying for years on my Caribbean stall in our city, but I have seen it in Tesco's in the ethnic foods aisles.

It may been seen as a ‘new’ drink, but coconut water has been enjoyed for years in tropical climates such as Jamaica, the Far East and Brazil, and Grace Foods – established in 1922 – is surprised it hasn’t caught on before. Nyree Chambers, Marketing Manager at Grace Foods, comments: “Coconut water isn’t a new product to Grace, but we’ve noticed its popularity increase dramatically since the summer when celebrities began to talk about its benefits.

“Not only is it a delicious drink – it has so many health benefits it’s fantastic. It’s also stiff competition against sports drinks as it re-hydrates faster than energy drinks and is fat free – so it’s great for gym bunnies that need to cool down quickly but don’t want to replace the calories they’ve just burnt off."

So what’s the secret to coconut water? Well, it’s packed full of natural electrolytes – it actually balance matches the level in human blood - including potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium and phosphorous.

These minerals are vital for muscle movements, nerve transmission and brain operation to name a few. The water – which comes from young green coconuts – also boasts thirst quenching properties, is rich in vitamin C, combats fatigue and can act as an aid to slimming as it reduces fluid retention.

Priced from just 74p for a 330ml can, it’s a New Year must for anyone wanting to lose those festive pounds.

Russian Standard Gold Review

THE GOLD STANDARD

RUSSIAN STANDARD INTRODUCES A NEW PREMIUM VODKA

On 1st April 2010 Russian Standard, Russia’s No.1 premium vodka, introduced a new luxury vodka in the UK – Russian Standard Gold.

This announcement could be passed by as seeming  pretty standard but it would be a mistake.
Vodka is my true spirit of choice, I have tried over ice, I like it with bitter lemon, tonic, cranberry and pomegranante as well as the amazing Funkins pure juice mixers I recently reviewed.

When I was asked if I would like to sample Russian Standard Gold I was expecting a good premium vodka.
When it arrived in its gold case I was pretty impressed, more so as I opened the case and saw the Gold standing in its own red lined cabinet!

It truly is showcased in pure Russian style, golds and reds and ornate engravings.
I am expecting  greatness in this drink, fit for a Tsar.

I tried neat over ice and its such an impressive taste. It has a caramel sweetness and for vodka is incredibly sleek, almost silky to taste.
It is a spirit that deserves some time to be taken drinking it  I immediately had to try another and then close the box and stow away for Christmas. Certainly not made for a  quick swig or in a shot on a night out.
It truly suits a festive occasion and is now waiting patiently in my cupboard, at least one of is patient!!

I must recommend you to take a peek on the website and watch the premium advert for Russian Standard. Its a world of art and very stylish.

A smooth and rich vodka, Russian Standard Gold hosts a range of subtle sweet notes which blend together exceptionally well to create a magnificent spirit that can easily be consumed chilled on the rocks or with a favourite mixer. The bottle is housed within striking gold packaging creating the ultimate golden gift for friends or family.

Distilled from the finest Russian winter wheat from the southern steppes of Russia, blended with the softest and purest glacial waters from Lake Ladoga and incorporating time-honored Siberian golden roots which provide a soft taste - Russian Standard Gold is clear, pure, smooth and strong quality vodka, perfect for any discerning vodka drinker.

Russian Standard vodka is steeped in Russian heritage; it is based on the vodka formula created by illustrious scientist Dmitri Mendeleev and is produced with premium Russian ingredients which are distilled at Russian Standard Vodka’s state-of-the-art distillery in St Petersburg.

Jo Birkitt, UK Brand Manager for Russian Standard Vodka comments: “We are delighted to be extending the Russian Standard Vodka range in the UK. Russian Standard Gold is truly unique vodka; the smooth texture and vanilla hues make it an ideal choice for discerning vodka drinkers who are looking for something very special to drink at home.”

“Our consumers also tell us that they have been looking for an exceptional vodka that can be given as a gift, so in response to this Russian Standard Gold is available in a premium gift box that not only conveys the specialness of the vodka inside but also makes this vodka the perfect gift for all occasions.”

COLLADEEN VISAGE - CARE FOR YOUR COLLAGEN

Feel great this Winter - feed your skin with NEW Nature’s Best Colladeen Visage…

Nature’s Best has developed NEW Colladeen Visage, to help preserve collagen by using ‘skin-loving’ ingredients.

Collagen is a protein that forms 75% of our skin and sustained ‘free radical’ damage leads to visible signs of lines and wrinkles, as the skin loses its elasticity. Lots of nutrients are needed to keep collagen healthy but increasingly research has focused on a class of natural plant compounds called anthocyanidins found in dark skinned fruits. Research shows that these compounds can help to reinforce and preserve collagen by literally blocking the action of ‘free radicals’ and other destructive enzymes called collagenases. Colladeen is one of the top selling anthocyanidin products in the UK and now Nature’s Best are launching NEW Colladeen Visage which contains even more beauty boosting ingredients**.

As well as a high level of anthocyanidins (at a level that matches published studies), nutrients called carotenoids have also been recognised as playing a protective role against the damaging effects of sunlight. Two particularly ‘skin loving’ carotenoids – plant-derived lutein and zeaxanthin found in dark green leafy vegetables – have been added to NEW Colladeen Visage. Plus a high level green tea leaf extract, a potent anti-oxidant known to combat the cell damage caused by free radicals. Few companies actually quote the anthocyananidin content of their product, giving just the weight of the plant material which gives no guide at all to potency.

Celebrities might be able to afford injectable fillers to replace the damaged collagen and create a ‘plumped’ out face, but they can end up looking ridiculous. NEW Colladeen Visage may be a far less painful and subtler alternative to support collagen levels from within. But should we really be popping a pill instead of applying creams?

“Moisturisers don’t always penetrate to the lower layers of your skin,” explains nutritionist Dr Sam Christie. “Colladeen can reach all the cells in the dermis – and quickly. The ingredients enter your bloodstream after 15 minutes. Women using Colladeen have reported less wrinkling in their hands, face and around the eyes. We can expect NEW Colladeen Visage to yield even more positive results.”

Nature’s Best Colladeen (£14.95 for 60 tablets, Naturesbest.co.uk) and NEW Nature’s Best Colladeen Visage (£17.95 for 60 tablets) contain one of the richest natural sources of anthocyanidins.

Both are available to order online www.naturesbest.co.uk or by phone 01892 552094. You can call 01892 552175 for free advice from one of Nature’s Best Nutrition Advisors.

I am all for trying natural methods to keep youthful and also have been told many times by my grandma what goes in must come out and this though creating laughs in the family was a great saying to live by when it comes to health.
I know I do like anti aging creams, lotions and potions  to accentuate the good and hide and repair some of the bad.
I also know that if I drink lots of water have a good diet and rest I am likely to keep my skin looking its best.
I also now have Colladeen Visage  to take,  it has  anthocyanidins which  literally means  "flower blue" and is present in dark fruits such as grapes.
These help plump out the skin, around the eyes, help skin, even improve wrinkling and is probably  alot better than going down the botox road.
I know that after a few days even though its cold and my skin doesn't usually look radiant at this time of year, I have a glow to my skin and my hands look smoother.
