Whitworths Baking with children

A happy bowl and smiling faces all make the cakes taste better! Honest!

We love baking always have, both of my two will often say I'm bored can we make cakes, its satisfying on two levels. Firstly they dont always head for the console games(That has taken years of my feet firmly down to achieve and has not been without tears though)and secondly they have a love of cooking. Its a cunning plan of mine which will stand them in good stead for life and providing them with lots of good meals and being able to cook for me lots hopefully!!.

Dodgy camera work but you can see the yummy raisins being added.

Whitworths have some great additions for cakes and we knocked up some rather yummy orange and raisin cupcakes. Paige added Sainsburys Orange extract to add a new taste to normal cakes.

So results are, we satisfied boredom, the oven on meant we were toasty warm on this chilly November day, plus we satisfied our tummies!!

There are more Whitworth Sunny Raisins in this cake, they are hidden form prying eyes!!

Its getting colder, so my tip is get that oven on, get some great music on in the kitchen and get baking with the children.

Winter is well and truly here and will be for the coming months – so what can you do with your little ones whilst the weather is so miserable and its already dark before dinner time?

DVD’s or computer games are a great way of keeping your children entertained, but when it comes to creativity and interaction – there’s nothing better than taking time out to bake with your kids.

Baking is educational too – without it being obvious! Ingredients are weighed out, recipe instructions followed and cooking times adhered to, and you can enjoy watching your child get excited about the process of making something, watching it transform into an edible dish and finally being able to eat something they’ve made with their own tiny hands.

Not only is it good for your child’s creativity, it gives mums and dads an excuse to relax from the daily grind and bond with their children over something they too enjoyed as a child. Additionally, it’s a cost effective hobby as once the ingredients and utensils have been purchased, many a baking session can be enjoyed without much further expense.

Whitworths, the UK’s largest supplier of fruits, nuts and seeds, has seen a recent increase in the purchase of baking products, and as baking becomes more fashionable Whitworths expects demand to rise further.

Clinton Orchard, Whitworths Marketing Director, commented: “The increase in cooking programmes - especially the recently aired BBC Great British Bake Off - has brought baking to the forefront of people’s minds and reminded them of the enjoyment it provided during their childhood. Baking with your child offers a valuable bonding session whilst creating good old fashioned home made goodies.”

Whitworths offers a wide range of baking products including the Juicy range of Mixed Fruit, Sultanas, Currants and Raisins – ideal for fruit cakes, scones or bread and butter pudding. Other fruits include apricots, cranberries, dates and pineapple which taste great in biscuits, puddings and cupcakes.

In addition to baking, why not include a snack size pack of dried fruit, such as Sunny Raisin, in your little ones lunch box? It’s a healthier alternative to crisps and chocolate, and will keep your child going throughout the school day.

Alternatively, the recently launched Frootz are a fantastic alternative to sweets. Frootz are delicious little bags of high fruit buttons in orange, lemon, strawberry or raspberry. Packed with 80% fruit with no artificial flavours, colours or sweeteners – they’re even great for mums and dads wanting a guilt free treat!

Whitworths also offers a 35g snacking range. Available in handy sized bags, the five varieties include; apricots, prunes, pineapple, dates and cranberry, sultana & raisin mix – perfect for those on the go.
