DEMIJOHN SLOE DOWN – SLOE SHERRY HAS ARRIVED!

I love the time of year although the days are darker and colder, so many good things come, soups, casseroles, warming mulled drinks and hot toddy's.

A friend of mine introduced me to sloe drinks a few years back and I am hooked, they are so warming on a cold day, the most common is sloe gin.
Recently I was asked if I would like to try Demijohn's Sloe Sherry.
Having had a nasty encounter with sherry as a bridesmaid in my teens ( Well they were handing it out to wedding guests, I had never been offered alcohol before, liked it and revisited the foyer many times to sup my new drink, next day was a pain filled groggy day of deep regret.) I have avoided sherry ever since.

Loving sloe gin as I do, I was curious,  the sloes have such a distinct flavour thatI know blend with gin and vodka to transform those spirits into a tasty tipple. So sherry I thought would be the same.
I am so glad I was curious. In my opinion its well worth buying and drinking. It tastes very similar from memory to sloe gin, but sherry seems a rounder flavour, not as sweet and not as heavy in the fruit taste.
It will make a fabulous Christmas present, it never made it to a gravy I am afraid, but take Demijohns word for it, they got the delicious right.

Before you read about the Sloe Sherry, I just wanted to mention another treat from Demijohn. Their Seville orange gin, its seriously orangey, as you open the bottle the citrus scent hits your nose. Its a great taste too, a strong sharp taste, I added it to tonic and it was so refreshing. With cranberry juice and orange segments really fruity and zesty.

Slow food has just got slower with the launch of a delicious new autumnal drink – Sloe Sherry. The kings of quirky, artisan drinks – Demijohn - have added this new product to their shelves to offer an alternative to bestselling Sloe Gin.

Made exclusively for Demijohn in Malton, North Yorkshire, Sloe Sherry is for the serious sloe berry addict who simply can’t get enough of those delicious hedgerow berries. Less rich and lighter than the traditional Sloe Gin, Sloe Sherry is perfect for a pre-dinner aperitif or to fill that hip flask on a cold winter’s day. It can even be mixed with Champagne to make a Kir Royale or added to gravies and sauces for red meats for a richer flavour.

Demijohn is so passionate about its sloe liqueurs that last Sunday it shut its shops and took the whole team to Galloway on a sloe pickathon. The team picked 110lbs (50kg) of sloes in four hours which will be used both for their Yorkshire Sloe Sherry and their Worcestershire Sloe Gin. Such is the popularity of these drinks that Demijohn need to boost the raw ingredients to ensure they have a plentiful supply throughout the year.

True to its name Sloe Sherry cannot be made in a hurry. After years of experimentation and months of steeping the Sloe Sherry is finally ready. This year’s berries will not appear as Sloe Gin or Sloe Sherry until mid next year.

Demijohn Owner Angus Ferguson said: “Sloe berries are elusive, yet the perfect fruit to make rich winter drinks. This new Sloe Sherry is a clever new twist on our old British favourite Sloe Gin, but it will appeal to Sloe Gin lovers or who are ready to enjoy a new taste. Picking our own sloes demonstrates how passionate we all are at Demijohn in ensuring the ingredients and provenance of our products is credible. It also makes us appreciate how special our Sloe Gin and Sloe Sherry actually is, and that it is always worth the wait.”

Sloe Sherry Liqueur is priced at £3.80/100ml and is available from the Demijohn shops in York, Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as at http://www.demijohn.co.uk/.
